CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 3 PC REVIEW |
|
| |
When people
talk about video games these days, it's almost
impossible to go two minutes without someone
bringing up Call of Duty. It's one of the
best-selling franchises of all time, tempting
millions to to lie back on their
and play online every day,
and now it's back (and bigger than ever) in the
form of Modern Warfare 3. But is the latest
installment just another re-tread with a
facelift, or has the bar truly been lifted? If
you’ve played any of the Modern Warfare (or Call
of Duty) games, you won’t be in for many
surprises in terms of gameplay. But this isn’t a
bad thing; far from it. The gameplay is still as
fast, frenetic, and fun as it’s always been. The
game runs at a blistering 60 frames per second,
making it a smooth and highly enjoyable
experience. The single player game runs you
through a campaign charting World War III, so
you’ll visit all sorts of locations, including
London, Hamburg, and Paris.
There are some truly exceptional set pieces,
including a zero-G shoot-out in a plane and a
race through the London Tube. Players are always
kept on their toes, with enemies in plentiful
supply, and the difficulty levels are well
balanced, so even if you’re a complete ‘noob’,
you’ll still feel like a battle-hardened
soldier. In terms of new additions to the
formula, changes are minimal – although a couple
of new weapons are welcome, including a hybrid
sight attachment and awesome XM25 semi-automatic
grenade launcher. Modern Warfare 3 has been
criticized by some for being too similar to its
predecessors in terms of visuals, and this claim
does have some truth to it. Whether or not you
think this is a good or bad thing depends on
preference. The game does bear a striking
similarity to 2009’s Modern Warfare 2, however
it does have a few tweaks here and there that
make it stand out. Lighting, for instance, has
had a bit of an overhaul. Overall though, if
you’re looking for a game that pushes graphical
boundaries and is on the bleeding edge, you may
need to look elsewhere (Battlefield 3, for
instance). The sound in MW3 is as large-scale as
ever, with explosions and gunfire all over the
place. Sound is crisp and clean; it is
particularly astounding on a 5.1 surround
system. |

OVERALL RATING: 9.0 OUT OF 10 |

We’re not
sure how many people still play Call of Duty
games for their storyline, but we’re happy to
report that Modern Warfare 3 does a pretty good
job of telling a coherent yarn that ties up
loose ends from the previous games. It’s not
going to win any literary awards, but it keeps
you playing and there are a few twists and turns
thrown in for good measure. If you’ve been
following the story of Price, Soap, et al,
you’ll be happy with the plot in Modern Warfare
3. As for the main event, it's pretty obvious
that the multiplayer is what gamers are drooling
over. Modern Warfare’s multiplayer has become
widely known as one of the most addictive and
rewarding experiences currently available in
gaming – and for good reason. The leveling up
system keeps you coming back for more to push
yourself to that next rank, and unlock that next
weapon. Modern Warfare 3’s multiplayer is
relatively the same as previous outings, with a
few key changes.
Firstly, players can now rank up their weapons
as well as their player. This works well because
it encourages the player to try out different
weapons and loadouts. The other new multiplayer
features are Kill Confirmed and Team Defender.
The former helps newer players because it
rewards you for picking up dog tags left by
fallen players, making it a good place to cut
your teeth. Team Defender is a blend of Capture
the Flag and Team Deathmatch, with the
flag-holding team earning double points during
the game. There is also now a Prestige Shop
where you can buy in-game bonuses every time you
reach the level cap. So far, Activision has
continued to provide us with great FPS action.
Modern Warfare 3 may not be an expected
breakthrough in the FPS genre, but there are
enough new additions to give players a fresh
experience. It’s easy to assume that Modern
Warfare 3 is more like an add-on than a whole
new game, but this assumption is easily
dispelled after spending a few hours in the
fray. It may be a game that people love to hate,
but there’s no denying that Modern Warfare 3 is
a phenomenal experience that truly deserves to
be played. |
